Hawthorn fruiting trees en route Amarnath, in deodar altitude forests, Kashmir, India. Crataegus songarica or Hawthorn can be found from Afghanistan to Uttarakhand, at altitudes ranging from 1500 to 2700 meters, mostly around cultivated areas. Is is rather commonly found in Kashmir and along the Chenab valley. The flowers can be seen in May.

This is a deciduous tree that can grow as tall as 8 meters. It has deeply and sharply lobed leaves and flat-topped clusters of white flowers. According to Adam Stainton and Oleg Polunin in 'Flowers of the Himalaya', the leaves are deeply cut to two-thirds their width into nearly parallel -sided lobes with coarse acute teeth. The fruit are red and globular (about 1 cm. across).
