Rajasthan is known more for its vast stretches of Golden desert, picturesque sand dunes and typical desert life than for its water bodies or lakes. However, the few lakes that do exist comprise some of the most picturesque water bodies that one may come around. Gadisar Lake is one of the major tourist attractions of Jaisalmer. Gadisar Lake is actually a water conservation tank, made by the then maharaja of Jaisalmer, Maharwal Gadsi Singh around 1400 A.D. A beautiful arched gateway decorates the lake.
Gadisar Lake Rajasthan was selected as it had natural declivity and automatically retained some of the rainwater. The elaborate gateway to the lake was built by a royal courtesan towards the end of 19th century. The beautiful arched structure is known as Teelon-ki-prol (gate of Teelon). The lake is surrounded by ghats, temples, cenotaphs and gardens. There is a small temple of Lord Vishnu on top of the gate. The Gadisar Lake is surrounded by many shrines and temples mainly dedicated to Lord Shiva and Vishnu.
Apart from its picture perfect setting, the lake has earned fame for its wide variety of Avifuana apart from the amusement opportunities. An ideal picnic spot, boating in Gadisar Lake is one of its prime attractions. The world renowned Bharartpur Bird Sanctuary is located not too far away, and the reserves resident and migratory birds often visit the lake- much to the delight of bird watchers.
