00:00:26How long will it take before you go completely insane?
00:00:56How long will it take before you go completely insane?
00:01:26There was my boss, Bruce Wallace. At 32, he owned the so-called L.A. art scene,
00:01:51with galleries in the hottest spots and a battalion of art dealers under his wing,
00:01:56including myself. He depended on his parents' monthly checks to live out the American dream.
00:02:06His wife, Connie Vandercliffe, known within the vanguard circles of Rodeo Drive
00:02:13as the fur coat doll. Connie was Hollywood royalty with nothing to worry about,
00:02:19of course that worried me. My sweet dear Mae Donoghue, daughter of Kyle Donoghue,
00:02:26and revered amidst the bohemian aristocracy as the future inheritor of the Modern Arts Foundation.
00:02:33But to me, she was the door to infinite wisdom.
00:02:39Then there was I, Tim Miles, a man without a face, searching for my identity,
00:02:45swinging like a pendulum between art and commerce.
00:03:15So
00:03:29this is it. Last one in the pool is an art dealer at Wallace & Associates.
00:03:53It was the beginning of a beautiful vacation.
00:03:57How many rooms in this place?
00:04:01Oh, 56, including the east and the west wing. There's a bathroom in every room and a guest
00:04:05room, to your liking. We're gonna get lost in here. No. Ah, the dining room.
00:04:14Oh, I love the decor. You know, you could turn this place into a dashing auberge.
00:04:20Oh, yes. Well, there was talk in the family a few years back about turning it into a hotel,
00:04:24but they never went through with it. Hey, it's Dolly.
00:04:29Uh, he's a friend of my grandfather's. He killed himself. Jesus. Yeah. He was an artist,
00:04:35quite brilliant, actually. In fact, most of the stuff in here is his stuff.
00:04:40But, uh, he asked my grandfather if he could stay here for a while, and a few months later...
00:04:54I love that painting. First one I ever did. Won an award for it, too.
00:05:07It's been all downhill ever since.
00:05:11You should get back to it. You can't just give up like that.
00:05:15I haven't.
00:05:25So you like this place? I am so glad we came.
00:05:33I love you very much.
00:05:39Obviously, you don't know me at all. Maybe if you learned to listen once in a while...
00:05:43I know plenty. You're not the case, just like your mother.
00:05:46Oh, please. Pete and Maggie are on a walk in the park. You don't know how to commit yourself to
00:05:52anything. You change jobs like underwear because you're not good at anything. I know that.
00:05:58Your dad knows that. But Mommy thinks her little boy is a genius.
00:06:05At least my mother didn't die in a loony farm.
00:06:08Okay.
00:07:08Drum roll, please.
00:07:23Ta-da!
00:07:25Allow me to present tonight's dinner. We have two slowly roasted trout stuffed with my
00:07:38special almond and orange cream, just a hint of sage, and a subtle breeze of pistachio.
00:07:55So
00:08:15has anyone ever told you that your hair is the exact color of a perfectly cooked
00:08:19crème brûlée? No.
00:08:24What's this? Crème brûlée is the sweetest,
00:08:27most delicious dessert you'll ever... Oh, hey! I have made a new friend. Hi.
00:08:34Hi, Mr. Miles. I'm Gigi's daughter. My mom won't come for cleaning.
00:08:39Did something happen? Yeah, my uncle died and everybody traveled to the funeral.
00:08:46But I'm still here to take care of you. Oh, well, I'm sorry.
00:08:51Well, if you need anything, you know where to find us.
00:08:55Thanks, Mr. Miles.
00:09:01How old is she?
00:09:05Without mankind, there's no art, and subsequently, without art, there's no mankind.
00:09:10Do you think that's true?
00:09:12I don't know anymore. I've been at the gallery for, what, two years now, and
00:09:16I haven't had time to pick up a brush. I'm alive.
00:09:21Yeah, but you're still practically living in a gallery,
00:09:24seeing and breathing art all day long. Yeah, but I'm selling it. I'm not making it.
00:09:32Now, you are treading a blurry path, my friend. The way I look at it, I'm a businessman of art.
00:09:38And so are you. You're just still a little scared to admit it.
00:09:43Maybe you just haven't found your true calling yet.
00:09:47Yeah.
00:10:07Oh, man.
00:10:37So,
00:11:07so,
00:11:37so,
00:11:58we did it, sweetheart. You and me.
00:12:07Come here. Come on.
00:12:25Our parents got married in here, you know.
00:12:31And I thought that it would be appropriate if we got engaged here.
00:13:01Woo!
00:13:16Madness is totally in right now. It's brilliant.
00:13:21Now, you guys need to try a little of this. We've got some chicken breast stuffed with goat cheese,
00:13:29a little lemon. Tim doesn't eat chicken.
00:13:34That chicken reminded me of the bird boy. The bird boy?
00:13:39Yeah, well, I told you, this place used to be a slave farm, and a thousand slaves died of
00:13:44exhaustion, beatings, unimaginable atrocities, really. As the story goes, the slave woman gave
00:13:51birth to a deficient child, and knowing that the guards would kill it, she hid it. And when they
00:13:56came to find the woman, she had killed her own child by suffocating it while she breastfed it.
00:14:01Well, they took the woman up to the tree, and they hung her there, tied her up, and the vultures
00:14:06came and packed away at her one little bite at a time. So, according to locals, that if a bird
00:14:10comes into your house, it's the bird boy. And you have to kill it right then and there, because if
00:14:15it gets out, say, the bird boy will take your sanity with him.
00:14:26That's not funny. There's nothing scary about that.
00:14:30Ah, it's not really a scary story. It's just something that happened here.
00:14:34All I know is I gotta go pee, and someone's coming with me.
00:14:37I'd like to get out of here.
00:14:39I'd like to get out of here.
00:15:07I'm sorry.
00:15:09Forget it.
00:15:15You understand, right?
00:15:19Sure.
00:15:27You're angry. I can tell.
00:15:29May, I'm just trying to figure out why every time we have sex, it's like you're...
00:15:39Never mind.
00:15:45I just feel funny about that kind of thing.
00:15:47You feel funny about everything, May.
00:15:49I just feel funny.
00:15:51I just feel funny.
00:15:53I just feel funny.
00:15:55I just feel funny.
00:15:57You feel funny about everything, May.
00:16:01You have no reason to be so uptight.
00:16:05It's not easy, right?
00:16:11I'm trying to understand.
00:16:15I thought maybe it was a guilt thing.
00:16:17Once we got engaged, things would be different.
00:16:21Apparently not.
00:16:27I don't know.
00:16:57I don't know.
00:17:27Can't you pick up someone?
00:17:29Someone more affluent.
00:17:33Not at all impressed, I find your antics true.
00:17:39She's gone, and I won't believe that.
00:17:41She's run away with the opposite type.
00:17:49Right!
00:17:51Right!
00:17:55She's got the opposite type.
00:17:59She's got the opposite type.
00:18:01She's got the opposite type.
00:18:03She's got the opposite type.
00:18:19Jesus, look at this filth.

00:19:47Come on, what are you, a communist?
00:19:49What is it?
00:19:51This, my dear, is filet mignon.
00:19:55You're absolutely right, this is liberating.
00:19:59Here, eat it.

00:53:00so
00:53:10so
00:53:18oh
00:53:30oh
00:53:44oh
00:53:54how will we know when we've achieved it
00:54:00how do we know
00:54:02when we've achieved it
00:54:08how do we know
00:54:10that we're free
00:54:12from art
00:54:16yeah how are we gonna know
00:54:26when you can look at a piece of art
00:54:28and feel absolutely nothing
00:54:34can we do it
00:54:36of course
00:54:38then what
00:54:58there you go old buddy
00:55:00no hard feelings right
00:55:04you're awfully quiet
00:55:08what's on your mind
00:55:10share your thoughts with the group
00:55:14you wanna know what i'm thinking about right now
00:55:16yes
00:55:18what evil thoughts
00:55:20are coursing through that little mind of yours
00:55:24for starters
00:55:26i'd like
00:55:28to peel the skin off your body bruce
00:55:30why
00:55:32don't talk to me that way
00:55:34you're gonna make me blush
00:55:36perhaps pour a little alcohol
00:55:38on top just to give it a little kick
00:55:40alcohol on my skinless body
00:55:42now there's a thought
00:55:44but
00:55:46if i have any say in this little fantasy
00:55:48of yours
00:55:50i'd prefer champagne if at all possible
00:55:56how about me
00:55:58oh connie
00:56:00i have nothing but sympathy
00:56:02for the vulgar
00:56:04sentimental soap opera
00:56:06that is your life
00:56:16my dear sweet sweet may
00:56:20i have no violent sentiments
00:56:22towards you
00:56:24at least none that come close to the damage
00:56:26you're already doing to yourself
00:56:40i say we propose
00:56:42a toast to such honesty
00:56:44i agree

00:57:00enlighten me bruce
00:57:02you see champagne
00:57:04is such a divine creation

00:57:10of our senses
00:57:12sound
00:57:18sight
00:57:20smell
00:57:26and of course
00:57:28taste
00:57:30but
00:57:32touch is left out
00:57:34so we toast
00:57:38in order to fulfill that last
00:57:40missing sense
00:57:44is that true
00:57:46i don't know
00:57:48i don't know
00:57:50but there is a little point
00:57:52to this anecdote
00:57:56you see
00:57:58our goal has been to appease
00:58:00our appetites
00:58:02all of our senses
00:58:04well i've made

00:58:14but

01:17:08The songs of deepest beauty were the grunts of our stomachs, the chisels of our sculptures
01:17:19were our razor-sharp teeth, and the infinite power of creation laid solely on our appetites.
01:17:31So in tribute to my friends who didn't make it to this glorious evening, the Champagne
01:17:36Club was founded. Pool, sauna, tennis courts, horseback riding, and the very best chefs
01:17:44in the world offer our young couples a place where they can appease every single appetite
01:17:50and find themselves in the process. All major credit cards accepted.
01:18:06The Champagne Club was founded on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the death of the
