The Lodger (1927)

There's a serial killer known as "The Avenger" is on the loose in London, with a murderous obsession with "golden curls". Mr. and Mrs. Bunting have a lovely blonde daughter who, as it happens, is seeing one of the detectives assigned the case. When a mysterious chap arrives at the Buntings' house, and takes up lodgings in the room they have to let, suspicion slowly builds that he might be the man the police are seeking.

Based upon Marie Belloc-Lowndes' story "The Lodger" (first published as a short story, then expanded to a novel), this "Story of the London Fog" was director Alfred Hitchcock's first thriller, and, of several screen adaptations, the only silent version.
