ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)

STORY: A protest of teachers and students in Santiago to press the government for an overhaul of Chile's education system turned violent on Wednesday (June 25) after some protesters threw rocks at officers and riot police used a water cannon and launched tear gas to disperse the rowdy crowd.

According to local media, the estimated 50,000-strong protest is the latest move to ratchet pressure on President Michelle Bachelet to fulfill her campaign pledges for better and free education.

The previous administration of conservative Sebastian Pinera was blighted by dozens of angry and sometimes violent protests by students demanding that changes be made to the privatized education system established under ex-dictator Augusto Pinochet.
