Hong Kong residents head to the polls

This is not an official election, it's been set up by a group that's concerned Beijing plans to go back on its promise to allow democratic elections in the city

The poll offers residents the chance to vote on how they would like to elect their leaders

The organisers of the vote have seen opposition from pro-Beijing groups, both on the street and online

(SOUNDBITE)(English) FORMER HONG KONG CHIEF SECRETARY, ANSON CHAN, SAYING: "Because we've seen so many efforts in the past few weeks to obstruct and to prevent us from coming out. The fact that already, in the first two days of voting, we have over half a million voters casting their votes and expressing their desire for genuine universal suffrage. I hope that this is a message that the government will take into account when formulating its proposals on universal suffrage."

Beijing has called the election illegal
