Internal Resorption in primary teeth - Inside of baby tooth dissolves away.

1. In the bottom two teeth seen on this X-ray there is a medium sized cavity present on the tooth on the bottom right side.

2. A filling was placed in the tooth when she was four years old as can be seen in this X-ray by the outline of the very white material. Notice the shape of the dark middle part of the tooth extending down towards the roots.

3. This X-ray taken when the patient was 8 years old or 4 years after the filling was placed. Notice how large the dark area is in the root of the tooth on the right side. This is because the root is dissolving away. No one knows for sure why this occurs but it is likely due to slight swelling inside the tooth.

4. Although the tooth appears perfectly normal when looking at it in the mouth, the tooth is severely damaged and needs to be removed. If not removed the tooth will continue to dissolve away and eventually crack or fracture.

5. This is a photo of the tooth that was removed. Notice how little roots are left on the tooth.

6. This is another photo of the same tooth taken at a different angle. A hole in the tooth is evident were it has dissolved away.

7. This photo was taken after the removal of the tooth that was dissolving away.Removal may not be the only treatment needed in some cases

8. Notice in this photo how rotated and overlapped the lower front teeth are. This condition is commonly referred to as crowding.

7. Because of the crowding present in the front teeth, the tooth right in front of the tooth that was removed, called a canine, may be pushed or drift back. If the canine moves to far back, there may not be enough room for the permanent tooth that replaces the baby tooth removed to come in. This could create an orthodontic problem or make orthodontic treatment more involved.

9. To prevent the tooth in front of the tooth that was taken out from moving backwards, a device such as this on called a space maintainer is made.

10. The space maintainer is than glued to the tooth behind the one removed and has a metal wire that loops in front of it. This prevents the Canine tooth from moving backwards.

11.After the procedure is over, we have a happy patient.
