How can I walk among you,
Day after day,
Yet you do not see
This cancer eating me away,
Taking my life,
Leaving my family nothing
But memories
Of what I once was.

How can you not see
And know?
How? Why does it not show?
This monster within
Is not my friend.
Rather it is the demon
Bringing my life to an end.

Does this raging being
Not show in my ravaged face?
My makeup must be
Applied correctly,
And my eyes
Painted on straight.
My wig
Must be in the right place.

I feel as though
It must show.
Maybe, so far,
I am the only one
To know
That cancer is killing me.
