A 74-year-old woman is alive and recovering after being missing for a month. Traute Rankin, from central Florida, reportedly survived over 4 weeks living outdoors by eating granola bars and drinking soda.

She was reported missing on May 2nd after she disappeared from her home in Leesburg. Her family later learned she had set up a makeshift campsite under a palm tree about 30 yards from a busy road.

Rankin had placed a blanket down and filled a plastic bag with leaves to serve as a pillow. She ate granola bars from her purse for nourishment. Plastic soda bottles were found strewn about near the site.

According to her daughter, Renee Shelley, Rankin picked up discarded soda bottles and drank whatever was left inside them. When the elderly woman couldn’t find any more bottles, she attempted to walk to a local Walmart but collapsed due to dehydration along the route.

A Good Samaritan saw her lying on the ground and contacted police. Dan Shelley, Rankin’s son-in-law, says she appears to be in decent health. The family is thrilled to have her back but they want to make sure doctors are looking into her mental state.

Shelley believes unwarranted fear and paranoia caused her mom to disappear from her apartment.
