These methods require enrichment of the sample in a broth containing antimicrobial agents that specifically suppress competing microflora, prior to plating onto selective agars. The conventional methods suffer from a variety of disadvantages, including: the relatively long period of time required for completion of the protocol, several ‘hands-on’ manipulations, the requirement for many different chemicals, reagents and media, the possibility of other microorganisms masking the presence of the target ones, including overgrowth, and the relative subjectivity involved when interpreting bacterial growth on selective and differential agar plates.
