Mama grizzly bears are known to be especially aggressive while caring for their cubs, and if one attacks you, it's pretty much up to the bear whether you're going to live or die, as a woman in Alaska found out last Sunday.

A woman and her soldier husband were jogging around Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, near Anchorage Alaska, but the husband ran ahead. The woman came to a bend bend in the trail and happened upon a mother bear with two cubs. Spring is the season when bear and moose are most aggressive because they have new young to defend.

The eight foot tall bear responded as if the woman were a threat and attacked her, clawing her arms, legs, neck, and body, then leaving her to die. Incredibly, the woman survived the attack, then walked two miles up hill to find help. She reached a road and another soldier saw her as he drove by. She was taken to hospital where she is recovering.

The Air Force advises its personnel to bring 'bear spray' when they go jogging around the base. Bear spray is a form of pepper spray that will irritate the bear's sensitive nose and eyes, but not deal permanent injury to the animal.

Even though it attacked a human, the grizzly bear will not be shot. Instead the Alaska Department of Fish and Game recommends that people stay away from the area for a week, giving the bears time to leave.
