Narendra Modi, India’s prime minister-elect, has promised to work to "fulfil the dreams of 1.2 billion people" as he addressed his supporters for the first time after he led his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a landslide election victory.

Modi is the son of a poor tea seller, something he reminded voters of time and time again, bringing his mother out with him to campaigns.

But his history is not without controversy.

He is a self-confessed Hindu nationalist and has close connections with the RSS, a right-wing Hindu group that is considered to be the BJP's ideological mentor.

Al Jazeera's Erica Wood reports.
