There’s nothing thinner. First produced in 2004, graphene is a sheet of carbon that is just a single atom thick. Since then, researchers in fields from computer design to aeronautics are pursuing applications for the promising high-tech material.
The EU’s framework research program Horizon 2020 is even going to provide €1 billion to help the research along. At the world’s largest congress on the material to date, representatives from research and business met up to talk about graphene’s bright future.
