A plan put together by Moscow State University, the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Russian Federal Space Agency says that moon colonization should become the country’s top priority.
A plan put together by Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Russian Federal Space Agency says that moon colonization should become the country’s top priority.
It’s suggested that Russia have a lunar community inhabited by full-time residents established by mid-century.
The first phase of the initiative calls for detailed exploration of the moon’s surface to be performed by robotic devices.
They will focus on the moon’s south pole, the recommended location for the eventual base.
That should commence in 2016 and wrap-up in 2025.
2028 is the year targeted for the first manned trips to the vicinity. Actual moon landings aren’t advised, but it’s unclear why.
Those round trips are slated to be completed by 2030.
That’s when the focus switches to building an inhabitable environment that will serve as a permanent base station.
The building phase is anticipated to last until 2040.
Once the moon facility is up and running, it can serve as both an Earth observatory and a way to monitor space.
It is said it will also be useful as a launching point for going greater distances, as crafts carrying large payloads would have an easier time departing from there.
