'X-Men: Days of Future Past' time travels to save mutants and humans

The stars of ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ have celebrated the film’s world premiere in New York.
Directed by Bryan Singer – who also helmed the first two films in the original trilogy – ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ sees the return of characters such as Storm, Shadowcat and Iceman from the previous franchise. They feature alongside the characters from ‘X-Men: First Class’ including the young Magneto, the Beast and the young Professor Xavier.
Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence contrasted her role as Mystique in X-Men with her ‘The Hunger Games’ character Katniss Everdeen.
“I really love all the physical parts of it. I love her fights,” said Lawrence. “It’s very different from Katniss. That’s a lot of archery practice and kind of running. But Mystique moves very differently, so the training is very different and really fun.”
James McAvoy joined the film series as the young Charles Xavier in the 2011 film, ‘X-Men: First Class’. The Scottish-born actor was impressed, but not surprised, by the big crowds at the premiere.
“X-Men inspires a real sort of fervent following,” McAvoy explained. “I don’t know what it is. I didn’t realise that when I signed on to do ‘X-Men: First Class’, but over the last couple of years, I’ve really come to realise that it’s so precious to its fans and I’m privileged to be part of taking care of it for them. And I hope they like it because we do it for them. If it wasn’t for them, these films would not exist.”
Michael Fassbender plays the younger version of Ian McKellen’s character, Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto. He was also impressed by the fans.
“Very exciting,” said Fassbender. “These guys are amazing. This is what it’s all about. They’re the best.”
The film takes place in the future with humans and mutants on the verge of annihilation. The X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that would result in doom for both humans and mutants.
‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ opens in US cinemas on May 23.
