A three day festival known as Songkran was in full swing in the streets of the captial city of Thailand, Bangkok.
Thais and tourists sprayed each other with water pistols, and drenched themselves with buckets of water in order to wash away bad luck and usher in the new year.
At Sanam Luang, hundreds of Thais gathered to pay their respects in a solemn ritual, gently blessing themselves and each other with water symbolising renewal during the festival.
Many Thais use the holiday to visit their families and go to temples to offer offerings to Buddhist monks in exchage for their blessings
