Under pressure Samsung starts selling its Galaxy S5

It is a crucial time for Samsung as the fifth version of its flagship Galaxy S went on sale worldwide on Friday in an increasingly competitive smartphone market.

Launched only 11 months after its predecessor the S4, Samsung needs this model to perform well after saying earlier in the week that it is on track to post its second straight quarter of declining profit.

One problem for Samsung is that the S5 cannot yet be sold by mobile phone carriers in its home market, South Korea.

There is a temporary ban on sale of the model by the government to punish those carriers for previously boosting their phone subsidies too high in a bid to gain more customers.
