New technology is in development for motorists who have a real problem with road rage or fatigue. EPFL, the Lausanne campus of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, in collaboration with
PSA Peugeot Citroen is currently working on what is called an ‘emotion detection system’ for cars.
The technology will reportedly read a driver’s facial expressions and search for weariness and agitation. Researchers first developed the system by exhibiting still images of people in an office setting or in real life situations like driving.
Essentially the minds behind the project taught the technology how to read emotions from those pictures.
Later, the system read expressions from video utilizing what is referred to as ‘facial monitoring algorithms’. The videos were taken via an infrared camera, which had been installed behind the steering wheel of a vehicle.
Said one of the lead researchers ‘Overall, the system worked well and irritation could be accurately detected in the majority of cases.’ The team have not said what would happen once the images have been read. Perhaps the system could release a calming voice once anger sets in or an alarm signal for sleepy drivers.
