Taliban gunmen attacked the main Afghan election commission’s headquarters in Kabul on Saturday.

The militants had taken over an empty house outside the compound and fired on it with rocket-propelled grenades and heavy machine guns.

Staff took refuge in safe rooms while security forces battled the militants, killing all four of them.

The owner of the house, Haji Mohebullah, described what happened: “Four suicide bombers entered my house. I had three guards, two outside and one inside but I don’t know what is happening right now. The attackers were wearing women’s burqas.”

Security had already had been stepped up around the compound ahead of next week’s presidential election.

It’s the third big assault on the Afghan capital this week.
