Astronomers have discovered what they believe are the waves of gravity that rippled through space right after the Big Bang.

US scientists say it is a landmark discovery in understanding how the universe was born.

The waves – evidence of a rapid growth spurt 14 billion years ago – were captured by a telescope looking at a piece of sky outside the galaxy known as the “Southern Hole”
