The killings started in late August 1988 at the end of Iran Iraq war.
Basically, all enemies of state (Leftist, Moslems who disagreed with Khomeini, Nationalist, Liberals. intellectuals and others) were systematically interrogated and then executed throughout Iran and buried in unmarked mass graves in various cities. Every year symbolically, the families of these victims hold vigils at known mass gravesites and they are forbidden to open up the graves to retrieve their sons and daughters and give them proper burial. The bodies lay in large canals dug out by backhoes. The most symbolic site is a site called “Khavaran” right outside of capitol Tehran- Iran. There are at least 22 KNOWN sites in Iran
How many were killed? Registered cases are more than 5000, but the real numbers are estimated at thousands more, based on the number of missing political prisoners that were known to be in government custody but never returned home. We will not know until Islamic Republic is removed from power.
