Lemurs are reportedly the most threatened group of mammals on the planet. Experts have made a public announcement that the species of primate might be facing imminent extinction if conservation efforts aren’t enacted.

A three year plan was introduced to try to save the lemurs, which only live in the wild in Madagascar, Africa. (
The conservation plan includes ecotourism as a way to get funding and raise awareness about the dangers of lemur extinction along with focusing on 30 different areas for habitat and lemur population protection.
There are around 100 different species of lemurs, and the most threatened species, the northern sportive lemur, only has an estimated 50 individual animals left in the group.
According to Christoph Schwitzer, head of research at the Bristol Zoological Society in Britain who worked on the conservation plan: “One cyclone or other natural event could wipe out the entire population. In fact, anybody who decides to go out lemur hunting could tip the species over the edge.”
There are several threats to the survival of lemurs, including habitat destruction from overdevelopment or logging, and locals hunting them for bush meat.
