The United States Navy might start training their sailors using a three dimensional virtual reality headset called the Oculus Rift.

Project BlueShark is a cooperative effort between the University of Southern California's Institute of Naval Technologies and the Office of Naval Research's Swampworks division that is studying how the virtual reality display system could be used for training, or for operating a real drone or vehicle in the future.

Lieutenant Commander Brent Olde, an Office of Naval Research's warfighter performance division deputy, is quoted as saying: “These new interfaces will provide the next generation of war fighter an unprecedented degree of battlespace awareness, connectivity and user-friendly equipment utilization.”

The Oculus Rift is a three dimensional virtual reality headset with seamless graphics display designed for video gaming, but it is not yet available to consumers.

Developers can special order the headset for three hundred dollars.

Navy researchers are using the headset along with touchscreen controls to test how it can be used as an effective training tool.

In the future, Navy vessels might be equipped with the Oculus Rift for controlling the ship, or real time interface and collaborative work across thousands of miles.
