Enrico Letta, who yesterday announced his intention to stand down as prime minister of Italy, plans to hand his resignation to President Giorgio Napolitano later on Friday afternoon.

The president is then expected to call on Matteo Renzi to form a new administration.

Renzi is the leader of Italy’s centre-left Democratic Party, the biggest party in the governing coalition.
