The body of former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon lay in state on Sunday outside parliament in Jerusalem, where Israelis waited to bid farewell to the maverick warrior-statesman who reshaped the Middle East.

Sharon died at the age of 85 on Saturday after eight years in a coma caused by a stroke he suffered at the pinnacle of his political power.

Draped in the Israeli national flag and brought to Jerusalem by military convoy, Sharon's coffin will lie in state for several hours on Sunday, with members of the public joining dignitaries in the courtyard of their parliament building.

Israeli President Shimon Peres was among those who laid a memorial wreath beside the coffin.

Sharon's former deputy Ehud Olmert was also among those paying respects.

A memorial service is scheduled for Monday morning before an afternoon burial at Sycamore Farm, Sharon's family ranch, where top Israeli generals will serve as pallbearers.
