Three people are now competing to become the first to cycle across Antarctica, through the South Pole.

Starting on December 17th from the Novo Russian Airbase, 35 year old British adventurer Maria Leijerstam has been making her way towards the South Pole on a specially designed tricycle with extra fat tires for traction in the snow and ice.

Designed by Inspired Cycle Engineering in the United Kingdom, Leijerstam is riding the customized recumbent trike known as the White ICE Cycle.

Leijerstam tested out the cycle’s performance in the bitter cold of Siberia, Norway, Iceland, and an industrial freezer.

Her route is over 400 miles long, going across the Leverett Glacier, through winds that could reach up to 50 miles per hour, and extremely cold temperatures for the approximately 20 days of riding and camping.

The other two people racing to cross the South Pole, Juan Mendez and Daniel Burton, are riding traditional bicycles, and are taking different routes.

Leijerstam is updating her progress using a twitter account with username WhiteIceCycle.
