Thailand marks ninth anniversary of tsunami

STORY: Mourners gathered in Phuket, Thailand on Thursday to remember those killed in the 2004 tsunami that devastated South and Southeast Asia, claiming the lives of more than 200,000 people.
The event is organized annually by Phuket provincial officials on Pathong beach, southern Phuket province.
Both Thais and foreign tourists gathered to lay flowers and light candles on the beach to remember the victims.
A magnitude 9.15 earthquake off the coast of Indonesia's Aceh province unleashed a massive tsunami across the Indian Ocean that killed around 230,000 people in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and nine other countries.
As many as six provinces were hit by the tidal wave along Thailand's Andaman coast, killing an estimated 5,400 people. Nearly 2,000 of them were foreign tourists.
