A fire that broke out at a Yonkers apartment building in the early hours of the morning led a mother to throw her three-year-old twin girls out of a window.

They were caught and taken to safety by a relative who was waiting for them on the ground.

The rest of the family used the second-story portal as well, believing it was the only way to escape both the fire and the thick, black smoke that was quickly filling the home.

All of them made it out alive, but the teenage daughter suffered a head wound and a broken foot and the mother broke her leg.

The blaze was quickly contained once firefighters arrived and upon inspection of the scene noticed that the family could have escaped through the back door.

That option likely wasn’t considered at the time as the smoke cover inside their unit was particularly heavy and a clear route to the more convenient exit probably wasn’t visible.

Firefighters also found signs that the fire, which began in a first floor hallway, wasn’t accidental.

They are currently investigating the cause of the blaze.
