Fans of the hugely popular Lord of the Rings Trilogy and The Hobbit, now have yet another way to geek out over the fantasy world of Middle Earth.

Google Maps has teamed up with the marketing division behind the upcoming film The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, which is the second installment of the 3 Hobbit movies, to make an interactive digital map of the fictional world called Middle Earth where the story takes place.

‘The Hobbit’ films, along with the ‘Lord of the Rings Trilogy’ are based on the best selling fantasy series of books by author J.R.R. Tolkien, who also hand drew detailed maps of Middle Earth to be included with the books as part of the mythology.

The Google Map of Middle Earth is an interactive rendering of Tolkien’s maps that includes a guided tour of not only the terrain, landmarks, towns and cities, but also the myriad of mythical creatures from the story like elves, hobbits and trolls.

You can find the interactive map website at middle-earth.thehobbit.com.

How much time will you spend exploring Google Map’s digital recreation of Middle Earth?
