A sixth French soldier has died in fighting against Islamist rebels in Mali, the French government said Monday.

The attack occurred in the north between Zaouaten and Boughessa near the West African country's border with Algeria.

Stéphane Duval was riding in a light vehicle when a roadside bomb exploded.

The 32-year old special forces soldier was participating in search operations aimed at rooting out extremist groups.

The blast seriously injured two other soldiers. A helicopter evacuated the wounded to the nearby town of Tessalit.

President Francois Hollande in a letter of condolence praised the French troops in Mali.
