Human Selfishness Gets in the Way of Tackling Climate Change

According to a new study, the delayed benefits of lowering greenhouse gas emissions might be a major obstacle for preventing future climate change. Giving up the energy consuming lifestyle that so many have gotten used to seems like something that many people do not agree upon, and would certainly cause economic shifts.

Giving up the energy consuming lifestyle that so many have gotten used to seems like something that people do not agree upon, and would certainly cause economic shifts.

Researchers from New York University in the United States working together with German scientists, gave study subjects a 55 dollar budget, and told groups that they could invest varying amounts of money into an account that would be used for an advertisement about climate change.

A condition of the study was that if the group’s account reached its target goal, they would receive a 60 dollar reward.

The groups of study subjects were then separated so that the reward would either be paid the next day, in 7 weeks, or be used to plant oak trees, which would benefit future generations.

Results of the study showed that the more delayed the reward was, the less money the subjects invested in the climate change account.

What do you think about the obstacles that face the future of climate change?
