PETA Says Washington Redskins Should Change Team Mascot to Potato
  • 11 years ago
The National Football League’s Washington Redskins have refused to change their name. The latest group to chime in on the subject is PETA or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. They have suggested that the Washington Redskins change their mascot and logo to a redskin potato instead of changing their name to be more politically correct.

For years, there has been controversy over the depiction of Native Americans as mascots for sports teams.

Professional sports teams like the Atlanta Braves and colleges and high schools with mascots like the Indians have often found themselves under scrutiny. Some people believe that the use of Native Americans as a mascot promotes negative, stereotypical representations of the culture.

The National Football League’s Washington Redskins have refused to change their name so far.

The latest group to chime in on the subject is the organization known as PETA, or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

They have suggested that the Washington Redskins change their mascot and logo to a redskin potato instead of changing their name to be more politically correct.

According to PETA, potatoes are the most popular vegetable in the United States.

The animal rights group is not the first to suggest the potato logo and mascot change, with earlier references to the idea cited in online blogs and in the Washington Times.

It wouldn’t be too far of a stretch to change it as the team reportedly sells Redskins Mr. Potato Head toys.
