Money returns: pregnant woman gives back $4,000 in Indiana

Shannon Baker, 27, and her young daughter stumbled across an envelope containing $4,000 outside of a vitamin store in Merrillville, Indiana last week, but instead of keeping it, she decided to turn the money into police. Baker could have used the money, considering she was eight months pregnant with her second child, both she and her husband were out of work, and their car needed fixing.

The police told her that she was under no obligation to turn the money in, and that it wouldn't have been illegal if she had kept the cash. However, she wanted to teach her daughter about being honest and doing the right thing, so she still turned the money in.

"My kid was standing right there when I found it. So basically I taught my daughter how to be honest. And for me that was fine," Baker said.

The police put an announcement in the local paper about the envelope full of cash, which led a woman in her 70s showing up a few days later to collect it. She named the exact amount and denomination in the envelope, proving it belonged to her. As it happens, the money actually belonged to the woman's employer, and it had fallen out of her pocket. The police gave the elderly women Baker's address along with the money.

The woman went to Baker's home, and so was grateful she was almost in tears, according to Baker, adding that the woman gave her a card with a small amount of cash in it, and a hug, thanking her for her honesty.

"For me, it was to teach my daughter honesty and morally showing what I was taught growing up. To be honest about what you do," Baker said.
