Pregnant woman helps steal truck, gives birth in Dearborn Heights, Michigan
  • 10 years ago
Police in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, engaged in a high-speed chase down Telegraph Road after receiving reports that a black pick-up truck had been stolen. The truck's occupants attempted to evade police by driving down the wrong side of the road, into oncoming traffic.

Reports say the chase began at Ford and Telegraph Roads and after some near misses, the truck eventually crashed into a telephone pole near a Red Lobster restaurant on Richardson Road, ending the chase.

Three suspects, two men and a woman, jumped out of the truck and attempted to escape on foot, but police got a bit of a surprise when they found a fourth suspect in the truck--a woman who was nine months pregnant.

Naturally, the woman then went into labor immediately after police arrived and she was transported to hospital where she gave birth. The other three suspects were quickly apprehended and will face charges of auto theft, evading arrest and likely quite a few citations for their driving infractions.

Luckily, no one was reported injured in the chase and crash. Auto theft in Dearborn Heights (pop. 57,000) is not uncommon, with the FBI reporting over 200 cases in 2012, but a pregnant woman being involved was a rare enough story to make the case generate web clicks from around the world.

Authorities have not revealed the identities of those involved in the attempted carjacking.

It's unclear what prompted the group to steal the truck, especially with a woman so heavily pregnant. The woman will almost certainly face additional charges related to child endangerment.
