A fire broke out after a brawl among inmates at a prison in northwest Chile on August 13. It was reported that at least 24 inmates suffered minor injuries from the fire and the brawl.

The brawl reportedly broke out at the prison in Quillota, 80 kilometers north of Santiago. The prison houses about 550 prisoners. Local media reports that inmates set fire to garbage, and to their mattresses during the fight. The prison is reportedly to be severely damaged and requires three months to repair.

In December 2010, 81 inmates were killed in a fire at the country's San Miguel prison in Santiago.
