A group of children who set up a lemonade and lime stand ended up with 2nd degree burns, and they weren’t caused by the sun. The limes were the culprits.

When the kids first presented with reddened skin, the mothers of the five girls said they figured it was just sunburn.

More than a day after they’d set up the stand, one of the children woke up screaming in agony and blisters were starting to cover much of her body.

Soon, all 5 kids were in the burn unit of a Fresno, California hospital.

Eventually, doctors became aware of the limes and were able to diagnose and treat the reaction.

The children were in the intensive care unit for days and then in a pediatric hospital for weeks.

Who would have guessed that limes, when combined with ultraviolet rays, can spark a chemical reaction, causing the skin to burn severely.

Some wild plants are also capable of doing the same. In the case of all of the offending items, their chemicals can be washed off of the body with soap and water before they become a problem.
