Liberia’s Education Minister has expressed disbelief concerning the news that not one student passed the University of Liberia’s admission exam.

That’s about 25 thousand would-be college freshmen that won’t be filling the institutions seats this fall.

It’s been said that the problem stems from the civil war that ended a decade ago.

Still feeling its aftermath, many schools lack qualified teachers and basic materials.

This is the first year that not one student has passed the exam, though.

The Education Minister plans to meet with university officials to discuss the scores, likening the results to a “mass murder”.

She said she would like to see the tests for herself, as she has her doubts that failure of that magnitude is even possible.

A University spokesman said there is no plan to reconsider the decision. The university’s stance is that it’s up to the government to adequately prepare the students for higher education.

Having little knowledge of the mechanical basics of the English language was specifically mentioned as serious problem.

A general lack of enthusiasm among the test-takers was also noted.
