Andrew Strauss is backing Joe Root to prove he has what it takes to succeed him at the top of the England batting order.
The former captain retired at the end of last season and Nick Compton was the first to be given a chance to stake his claim to be Alastair Cook’s long-term opening partner.
After a disappointing series in England against New Zealand earlier this summer, however, he has now been dropped in favour of the Yorkshire youngster.
And Strauss is confident the 22-year-old can cope with the pressures of an Ashes series.
