Before you sell that old clothing item, make sure to empty its pockets.

38-year-old Dori Rhoades accidentally sold jewelry worth almost $20,000 for a measly $20.

She is a working mom with 2 young children. During the week of May 18, she was especially overwhelmed, scheduling her son’s birthday party, organizing her own anniversary and doing volunteer work at her kids’ school.

On top of it all, her neighborhood was planning a garage sale on the weekend. And Rhoades put an old, rarely worn jean jacket up for sale..

Inside of that coat pocket was a pair of $18,000 diamond earrings that had been in her family for years, along with $1,500 in cash she had put away for a vacation. The money and sentimental jewelry were sold, initially unknowingly, at the garage sale.

After realizing her mistake, Rhoades posted signs all over the neighborhood along with ads on Craigslist. She stated “It's my hope someone out there sees the story and knows the person who bought the jacket…I've just been beating myself up.”
