00:22something and that you could probably appear on stage as buttons fantastic I

00:31can see it now it's gonna go viral yes boss that's fantastic after four rollercoaster

00:46years in the classic car restoration business that worked I'm gonna claim my

00:50thought of everything it seems I finally cracked it happy customer that's a

00:55good feeling we've dragged our PR department you've got to get your asses

00:59over here damn quick into the 21st century our reach on that day was 317,000

01:06people and as brand ambassador if you happen to have a car in the UK I'm

01:12leading the charge at least that's what I thought

01:18if you've over promise you can't under deliver until my mum arrived they won't

01:26listen to me they'll listen to me and it turns out that once again I'm in deep

01:31trouble I'm gonna have to do something I'm gonna have to do something big oh my god

01:36okay so I don't have to do anything special really you'll just cover the event yeah yeah exactly that like I just need you to be there just need to get your face out there and get on our socials and it'll be fine all right and you're not gonna make me look stupid no Richard if you look stupid

02:10all right see you soon that was Lewis I've known him a few years now and that's in fact when we had our stand at Carfest he was assigned

02:18to run the stand for us but he was really handy at kind of social media and stuff so he now heads up

02:24the smallest cog social media department and today is his first attempt at a big event it's Land Rovers

02:32that's the theme people are coming from all over the country we're all going on a little cavalcade and

02:38then we all meet up at the workshop where there'll be loads of other people that have come along Lewis

02:43has put a lot of effort into it big promises if it works it gets our name out there on social media if it

02:52doesn't work it's taking a lot of time everybody's giving up their Saturdays and we can look like idiots

03:13real nice job why is it pink I don't know I'm Richard hasn't even seen it he'll like that I think

03:22oh Izzy I'm nervous why are you nervous it was my first proper proper big event for the workshop and

03:28it's like Jesus trying to make it look off-roady by putting on this wrong this is what I don't get

03:44about off-roading it's just make a mess of your car and ruin it for for what what's that looking like

03:54it look good yeah the people does it look like I know what I'm doing no

03:58wow well I would say the boys done good that's impressive the only thing missing is the boy himself

09:54this is his overland how does he get in and out of that ladder he's actually eight foot tall yeah

10:04that was actually a really significant day as well it's been a huge amount of fun

10:11and the social media bit brings that to life and shares it we're infused with this new energy and

10:16enthusiasm for what we do and we can share it with people some of whom might be customers that worked

10:49get something out of the way straight away um there has been a slight change in my circumstances

11:05recently um i got divorced which means i now live here and i like it it's got amazing views

11:12place to keep some of my cars and bikes and best of all it's closer to the workshop

11:19i am trying to put a silver lining on this it's been a tough few years but it's not all bad

11:36being closer to the workshop means i can commute in some of my more interesting old cars

11:42cars like this one and when i get to the workshop things are looking up

12:00welcome back to the workshop can you feel it it's different it's tidy we've got artwork on the

12:04walls and there's work that's debbie mcgee's mercedes sl the old mank interior gone new one

12:10going in the maserati indy it is such a relief to see work happening on that car it's nearly there

12:16anything you can't see is the team but they are here significantly they're actually in there every

12:22morning about nine o'clock they start the day with a meeting they talk about what they're doing we

12:27communicate it's the smallest cog 2.0 it's working

12:46i find myself upside down in debbie mcgee's mercedes a lot has happened with this car disc

12:58unresty brake pads are gone brake shoes are gone to be honest the list is never ending

13:05we took on debbie's mercedes after flood water damage rendered it a write-off

13:10oh no no no no no i love everything about that car obviously the emotional attachment to paul

13:20and it was my dream car this is not good it's like it's been washed up at sea

13:26because it's been sat for so long with water in it corrosion has taken place and it's actually broke off

13:32all the fuse holders so i've taken this one out and replaced it and uh i'm one step closer to

13:40getting debbie's car running so she can go back out and enjoy the road again demi i can hear you

13:46hello yes how are you i'm pretty damn good thank you good how are you very well indeed thank you i

14:52change is definitely in the air and there's been another one in my life recently

14:59eagle-eyed astute observer that i know you to be you'll have noticed

15:03this something not in the workshop so far something small sort of circular in shape

15:09i afforded it's neil neil isn't there and with good reason neil he's 62 and i think setting up the

15:17workshop is one thing overseeing it watching it grow gray but turning up every day with his lunch pail

15:24in his hand to clock on he's done that and now to keep his brain alive he's set up another workshop

15:31a little one at home this is his own business and i want to see it

15:49shop hello hello hello hello hello how are you wow blimey ha ha look at this welcome to green

15:59house towers this is it this is my little workshop mate it's gorgeous yeah yeah but you've done interior

16:03design oh yeah it's good i've got all the stuff i use on there for doing that with and i've got

16:08anything to do with mechanical stuff in this area and then oh look at this wow look down there that's

16:14the matterwork department that's the english wheel the guillotine the shop all down there and then all

16:19the paint side is that side oh exactly brilliant yeah it's fantastic it's only taken 60 years

16:25right i'm tough to bits and work coming in well yeah i've got i've got work this is where i wanted

16:30to get to working on the stuff you want to work on special cars it's special it's it's rare and this

16:35car's rare because it's the last but one ever made of m6 bmw it's cool isn't it it's just nice to work

16:40on stuff like that if i'm here to 10 o'clock at night it doesn't matter to me but if you're in a working

16:45environment where everybody wants to knock off like most people do five o'clock and that's where you

16:49add the old time sheets and that do you do time sheets here no well actually i don't need to i've got

16:54it i've got an app on my phone and i log in every minute of the day oh there it is asking me now

16:57what am i doing right neil i've got your meters running my meters spinning i'm going fish and

17:05chip friday will happen yep and i'll bring you a battered sausage see you soon tell our way go steady

17:14it'd be nice actually to go back in time to when richard and i first met when he's

17:20come down to tram in and we'd have fishing ship friday and to be honest we weren't really talking

17:24about businesses back then and we were talking about cars i know he's got the smallest car but

17:31i think you have got to step away from it now and again and just try and live your life a bit but let

17:34the pressure run in the business you never know i might actually get richard in your game to work on

17:39his e-type get some work out of him he'd like that there was a point when neil and i fired each other as i

17:44recall because i said i'm a terrible manager and you're unmanageable because that we neither of us

17:50were going to fit into those roles so neil's found his place his role is playing to his strengths i need

17:56to do the same

18:26the workshop is actually going well now thanks if we're honest in no small part to my stepping away

18:35a bit from day-to-day managing things but if we are going to secure the the high-end ultra rare jobs

18:43that i want to become a calling card of the smallest cog i need to go into full ambassadorial role that's

18:51my job now so i've been looking for opportunities and i think i've got one here friends of mine all

18:55ex-servicemen are involved in something amazing to raise money for the special forces club benevolent

19:02fund it's a charity thing but what they're doing is recreating lawrence of arabia's incredible trek

19:08in 1917 41 of them rode 685 miles on camels across the uncrossable from saudi to akbar in jordan

19:20i have volunteered to go and help for the last stretch as part of the support team

19:24but that gets me to jordan now the previous king of jordan was a massive petrolhead they knew him as

19:31the petrolhead king he didn't just collect cars only did collect cars he also raced them seriously

19:36and that ignited a sort of growing passion for classic cars in jordan well i'm going to be there

19:44helping the charity but i am an ambassador for the smallest cog put the two together and if i can

19:49turn what looks like a jolly albeit in aid of charity into a work trip that's a win-win

20:05so debbie mcgee's lever interior absolutely disgusting i've looked at trimmers and they want

20:2215 to 20 000 pounds to retrim this car which is gonna wipe the whole budget out straight away

20:27um she needs brakes exhaust systems electrics and we're not going to be able to do it for that

20:34so i've had a little bit of a brain wave there's a place in germany at the make the seat covers carpets

20:41door cards it all comes as a kit i can get that for around three thousand pounds but

20:48we're going to have to fit the interior ourselves which we've never done i'm going to order it and

20:56then i'm going to get myself and matt to fit it it's a gamble but i think it'll pay off i really do

21:18here he is matt i've got you a present is it what we're thinking i don't know depends what you're

21:37thinking oh where's it from germany debbie mcgee the lovely debbie mcgee's interior this is this is a

21:49whole interior yeah please be everything we need oh oh that's a carpet thank christmas a blue carpet nice

21:59well the main thing is it's the right color yeah genuine german interior i think debbie's gonna be

22:07one happy lady i made the mistake of telling lewis about my imminent trip to jordan must remember never

22:22to tell lewis anything ever right just talk me through this again with social media we have to

22:31do abstract things we have to be out there to grow the business right so in your efforts to publicize

22:58i will reluctantly concede i can see some point to this if a shot of me on a camel

23:11stars it means in arabic i'm gonna die she doesn't like me we're going to pop richard onto saraya and

23:19let him have a go at moving her around himself and schooling her himself and then we're also going to

23:24make sure that he has a chance to lie down on her because it's important he knows what it's like to

23:47camel lovely perfect two three there we go easy right oh i've trapped a nut

23:59i have trapped a nut quite badly oh there's a big lump at the back of the saddle it's hurting my

24:05bootox this is fantastic this is great publicity this is great for the social media okay richard i'm

24:26um you know she's trying to eat the sticks yeah i think maybe you should stick to uh driving cars

24:42this is going to be the difficult bit now isn't it yeah pulling up tight so we've unpacked debbie

24:50mcgee's lever interior uh we've got most of the interior in the car but we've left the trickiest

24:55bit to last which are the seats once we get these seats in um we get the car back to debbie as promised

25:00by richard on time and in budget so he's got to clip these over now yeah right so do we need to put

25:10sides on first i think so yeah oh it will stretch quite a lot by now if i pull that danger and try

25:21and hook this side up and over that will go there that's it this is really tight

25:27you've only just got that on there look so it's a bit worrying this is not going to be strong enough

25:41isn't it yeah that stitching's coming away there isn't it

25:53might have ripped it oh you're joking oh bugger um

26:00i've got a friend not far down the road he does you know household seats and hopefully he might be able

26:06to just uh do a little repair for us and return this maybe he's got something stronger yeah that

26:12he'd suggest because it's under so much stress yeah we've got to do something yeah all right let me

26:18make call i'll be back all right we was hoping to get these seats finished today that's not going to

26:24happen now so it's not ideal at all these are the risks you take unfortunately

26:30all right matt what do you got for me we tried to fit these covers yeah and this stuff's kind of

26:41unstitching yeah we've obviously ripped these literally pulling too hard like so much pressure

26:47i can see that you've got to really give it some pull to get it on which is why you've pulled the

26:52stitching away there yeah we were like properly token on it well i'll have to um take it off and

26:58restitch this cardboard back in and then i'll have to get some heat on the cover before i put it

27:03all back on yeah it gives it a stretch um because without that heat that will probably just happen

27:08again does this mean you're going to fit this for us as well not just repair it yeah it does

27:16you're a lifesaver

27:28that's the yeah that little nip and tuck there that makes all the difference

27:52is the door open i arrived in jordan last night i'm here to raise the profile of the trek and

28:01hopefully some money for a good cause but after a night in a freezing tent i'm the one looking for

28:09charity chaps there's really hot water knocking right still mustn't complain i'm just here for the

28:16tail end of the trek and mercifully turns out i don't actually have to ride a camel i think you

28:24should book with another travel agent next year i think well hang on who says anything about next year

28:38this is the sort of rhythm of the days on this trip the camel team sets off one of the cars will range

28:44ahead and find the route normally i've been one of the defenders with one of the teams but the king sent

28:53this for me to have a go on it's fully electric it's got a 500 kilometer range and it's actually very good

29:02off-road i've been invited to visit the museum in a man of all the king's cars so you see i'm stepping

29:12closer to meeting the right people and look i agreed months ago that i would do this trek just as a

29:19supporter but you know in the back of my mind i thought all the time i might get to pick up some

29:23context for the business that's how it works isn't it they appear to be about to go through customs

29:43yes customs and they're on camels anything to declare just a powerful smell

29:53well done well done mate i mean these guys 25 days of that it has never been done remember since

30:15lawrence did it nobody has ridden camels on that journey it's pretty cool and the town's gone berserk

30:22for it it's fantastic

30:43so the camel trek finished yesterday and it was fantastic uh then a journey here to amman where

30:51i am today and um it's down to business i have had a few hasty conversations around the subject of

30:56cars here already from what i understand the sort of collectible classic car culture is growing and

31:04the enthusiasm for it so i'm looking to see if there are opportunities might even meet some owners

31:10jordan's love of classics started with the royal family first stop a museum dedicated to the royal

31:16collection this should be good hello are you ida richard nice to see you how are you it's good to have

31:25you here i'm looking forward to seeing this hello how are you welcome to the museum thank you

31:32it's huge the the museum uses cars to portray the history of jordan and the royal family with the idea

31:45of what have these cars seen in their lifetime this is an early cadillac 1956 armored gift from president

31:55eisenhower to king hussein very interesting grange rover they were used for her majesty queen elizabeth's

32:03visit to jordan in 1984. now we go into the vaults

32:13any of these need any work yes some do some do oh you have a card yeah i don't know how you guessed

32:21i just saw it where shall we send them well perhaps to perhaps to hereford okay okay thank you

32:27very much you're welcome smooth richard smooth hopefully next i'm going to be whisked off to meet

32:33some classic owners we've got the seats back from oz he's worked his magic got it done quick time as

32:58well where we had stripped it he's re-stitched it all and made it all nice and tight again everything

33:05just seems to line up nicely now you reckon this is going to fit yeah it's not change shape is it so

33:16that's lovely i think deb is going to be impressed with this matt it's starting to look really good

33:22now yeah it is isn't it i reckon we'll get the heat in there yeah shrink everything in make sure it's

33:27all nice and tight and then just do our little final bit we don't want to do too much physical

33:34adjustment on this right away well what we've got to do now is get some heat into the leather

33:39that will make it really nice and pliable so we can pull it around and then hopefully we'll get it

33:45all to line up right fingers crossed we don't get burnt or the lever yeah

33:51amazing how much of a difference it makes on being able to flyable and move it around

34:02look at that yeah look you can really see where it's come

34:06really nice that's lining up lovely now yeah look at that it's really nice i think that's been a

34:11better it's gone in an absolute treat if we'd sent that to a trimmer's the budget would have been

34:19gone completely swallowed the whole lot up so the gamble has paid off massively matt's just going to

34:25finish heating areas now and then we will get it ready for a test drive

34:42we're now approaching the royal automobile club where we are meeting the car owners and collectors

34:49either kindly put some feelers out to the city's classic car community

34:55and it looks like news of my international marketing mission has spread wow

38:46i do miss the road trip we've had a few experiences oh yeah it's big not just a few cars

38:54and hopefully this one will be well received upon its return well she'd be glad to see it back

40:02that we'd done and we had a big round of applause and loads of people waiting for us and we're not

40:08going to get back today i don't think are we well but we're getting a very happy lovely debbie mcgee

40:11wow hello hello oh my goodness how are you oh i'm uh well i'm a lot better now i've seen my car

40:29no no no hello hello you're back and the key thing to know is with you know with what we had to spend

40:35on it yeah we have spent it yeah uh we could have thrown it all at the interior we could have thrown

40:39all of it mechanically so we've hopefully found the right balance we shall get out of your way go

40:43and enjoy it in the sun it works the same way it always did yeah i've got to remember now

40:51that smile says it all yeah that's what it is when it's got to be that car

41:03happy customer that's a good feeling um and not just because she is the lovely debbie mcgee

41:08off the television but also she is lovely and she loves that car and it's just right on her you

41:14could just see i think we did the best we possibly could have done for the money i'm really proud of

41:18what we turned out

41:45this is going yeah your social media campaign has resulted in me dressing as buttons yeah riding

41:53a frankly terrifying camel yeah and driving my land rover dressed up to look like something that

41:59escaped a circus what i want to know is yep is it working am i why am it it is working is it if i use

42:06the land rover day for example yes our reach on that day across that weekend that we put all our stuff

42:13out was 317 000 people and actually we've got some work out of it as well it is working and i mean

42:22i'll be honest with you i don't know why you've not done this before

42:25but this is this is great i'll concede it may be useful yep are we doing any more of these events

42:32we are actually we're gonna do more here and the smallest call is going to wemberly we're going to

42:38wemberly yeah so we got some cool things coming i'm not saying i'm glad to be dressed up as buttons

42:46and stuck on a camel but if it's going to be worth it and it is putting us in front of people and they

42:53do eventually feel compelled to bring their cars to us to work on then it's good for the business and i'm

42:58happy i'm going to view it as an experiment and i'm willing to continue but not necessarily

43:02indefinitely we shall see

43:13that massive great aston martin lagonda the owners they want us to paint it pink that's a lot of pink

43:20oh my god what's wrong with you why are you doing that oh you see i hope you're okay my darling i really
