Onto the eighth and final stage of Paris-Nice 2025, and finally a bit of blue sky after a week of battling the elements.
00:09
Matteo Jorgensen has a 37-second lead over Florian Lippovitz at the top of the general classification,
00:15
but we've come to expect the unexpected on the final day in Nice,
00:19
and the American who lives in the city knows nothing will be settled until he crosses that finish line.
00:26
I think we'll see every team try today. It's a short race, last day of the week.
00:31
There's a lot of teams that haven't had a stage win, and there's also a big fight in the top ten for each of the placings,
00:37
so I think we'll see a lot of racing today.
00:41
It's set to be a chaotic stage then, and lots of riders will fancy their chances.
00:46
While some will be eyeing up stage glory on the Promenade des Anglais,
00:50
others will be hoping to improve their GC prospects or trying to defend their current position.
00:56
Yeah, anything can happen, to be honest. It can change a lot in this last stage.
01:01
I wish I had the legs, I hope I have the legs to do something,
01:05
but I think if somebody attacks, it's always up and down, so it's everybody for themselves.
01:12
It's going to be a hard one, but for sure the strongest rider will win.
01:16
At just 120km, Stage 8 will be short and explosive,
01:21
with climbs up the Col de la Porte, the Côte de Paix, the Col d'Aize and the Col du Quatre Chemins.
01:27
It will definitely sting the legs, and any success will have to be earned.
01:31
Prepare for an unpredictable and spectacular finale.
01:39
I'm pleased to report, as you can see, the sky is blue.
01:43
It's wonderful, the sun is shining, the sun is out.
01:46
Well, as well as being sunny, the start today was fast and furious, and this man was on a mission.
01:51
Mads Pedersen leading the peloton down the descent of the first climb,
01:55
having tried to get in all the early moves.
01:57
The former world champion looking to secure victory in the points classification
02:01
by being first to the intermediate sprint on the Col d'Aize, and he was willing to take some risks.
02:07
Oh, look at the way that Mads Pedersen just uses the whole road.
02:14
Well, Pedersen had built a gap of more than a minute as they embarked on the final 50k,
02:19
and he was soon leading the way onto the Col de Paix, 6.5k at 6.9%.
02:25
Well, Red Bull Bora-Hansgrohe then decided to shake things up in the main bunch,
02:29
sending Alexander Vlasov up the road.
02:33
Alexander Vlasov of Red Bull Bora-Hansgrohe is on the move here.
02:38
Well, Vlasov heading off in pursuit of Pedersen as his teammate Lipovits tried to go as well,
02:43
but Jorgensen was marking the Germans every move.
02:52
Well, Felix Galle also attacked, and shortly before the summit,
02:56
he and Vlasov caught up with Pedersen at the front.
03:00
That trio went over the top with around 15 seconds over the yellow jersey group,
03:04
containing a dozen or so riders.
03:10
Well, just before the intermediate sprint,
03:12
the three leaders were joined by a fourth man, Magnus Sheffield.
03:16
Well, a little further back, Jorgensen had decided that attack was the best form of defense.
03:23
As now Jorgensen is starting to ride away from his closest rivals.
03:30
Pedersen taking 10 precious points at the intermediate sprint
03:33
enough to secure that green jersey and then pushing on with Sheffield.
03:39
Well, they had dropped Galle and Vlasov, who were soon joined by Jorgensen.
03:43
The final climb of the Col de Quatre Chemin was a climb too many though for Pedersen
03:48
as Sheffield went solo at the front.
03:51
The chasers soon passing the green jersey as well.
03:55
Sheffield looking strong, but it wasn't a done deal just yet
03:58
because he had Jorgensen on his tail.
04:00
The two Americans fighting all the way to the Promenade des Anglais,
04:03
but Sheffield had enough in the tank to hold off the yellow jersey
04:07
and the champion elect of Paris Nice.
04:09
A thrilling end to a superb race.
04:15
The final stage of Paris Nice belongs to Magnus Sheffield.
04:19
He takes his first WorldTour victory.
04:23
The INEOS Grenadiers certainly livened things up this week.
04:26
First with Tobias Voss, then in the crosswinds and finally here in Nice.
04:30
Their reward was an overall podium for Timon Arendtsman
04:33
and fourth place for an emotional Magnus Sheffield,
04:36
delighted to finally land his first WorldTour win.
04:42
I've been second so many times now.
04:46
It's my first victory at the WorldTour level.
04:50
It means so much.
04:53
Cycling is really...
04:56
Yeah, it's just so hard to win any race.
05:02
It means really so much.
05:06
Sheffield taking his fourth career win ahead of Jorgensen
05:09
who came from the same development team, Hot Tubes.
05:12
Gale finished second.
05:14
I was so well supported this week.
05:16
Today, I was pretty isolated.
05:18
We knew that was going to be the case with our Jonas here in the mountains.
05:21
But the rest of the week, we took full advantage
05:24
of having a really strong team on the flats
05:26
and just tactically and positioning.
05:31
Everyone was committed.
05:32
For sure.
05:33
It was a great race.
05:34
It was a great race.
05:35
It was a great race.
05:36
It was a great race.
05:37
It was a great race.
05:38
It was a great race.
05:39
It was a great race.
05:40
It was a great race.
05:41
It was a great race.
05:42
Everyone was committed from day one.
05:45
That feels really, really good.
05:47
I'm just so happy to be on this team
05:50
and have won Paris-Renaissance two years in a row.
05:54
It's crazy to say that.
05:57
Jorgensen winning Paris-Renaissance for the second year running
06:00
and doing so in some style
06:02
despite the loss of his teammate Jonas Vingegaard.
06:04
Lippovitz and Arendtsman complete the podium
06:07
while Schompassin was the highest placed Frenchman
06:09
in seventh overall.
06:12
Pedersen had a superb end to this Paris-Renaissance
06:15
winning stage six in the crosswinds
06:17
then collecting enough points in the mountains
06:19
to take green ahead of Jorgensen.
06:21
Tim Melia withdrew on the final day.
06:25
Tomagashinya goes home with the polka dot jersey
06:28
with none of the top KOM contenders taking points today.
06:31
Stora and Almeida were second and third in that classification.
06:36
Finally, Lippovitz, the overall runner-up
06:38
dominated the Best Young Rider competition.
06:41
A former biathlete taking white
06:43
by just over a minute from Sheffield.
06:47
And so the curtain falls on this 83rd Paris-Renaissance
06:50
which lived up to all its promises
06:52
as we turn our attention to the spring classics.
06:55
Join us again soon and as ever, thanks for watching.
