00:00Grazie a tutti
00:30Sicily, island of legend, of mountains and the mafia, an island of flowers and orange groves and abiding tradition.
00:41But Sicily is also the home of the very last of the world's truly heroic motor races.
00:46The legendary Targa Florio run every spring over these mountain roads.
00:51The names of past winners read like a roll of honour of the sport.
00:54Divo, Vazzi, Villoresi, Biondetti, Taruffi, Moss and perhaps the greatest of them all, Tazio Nuvolari.
01:03May the 4th, 1965. Five days to go and the Naples Ferry arrives at Palermo.
01:15On board, the leading contenders for honours in the 49th Targa Florio.
01:20Monte Carlo rally winner Timo Markkinen has this Healy 3000.
01:31There's an MG Midget for Paddy Hopkirk and Andrew Hedges.
01:34A prototype Healy Sprite for Altonen and Baker completes the BMC contingent.
01:49Porsche always do well in the Targa.
01:52A Sunbeam Tiger for Peter Harper and the Reverend Rupert Jones.
01:55And, of course, Ferrari are here.
02:06Soon the mountain roads reverberate to the signs of unofficial practice,
02:11for which most of the works teams have brought spare cars.
02:14But, for others, a long-suffering hired hack must serve.
02:40A lot of robber is left behind and there's some private dicing,
02:43despite the fact that the roads are still open to normal traffic.
02:50Scroogeneering is at Cerda, about 10 kilometres beyond the start.
02:55That's Rano Altonen.
02:59The Ford GT, immaculately prepared for Bondurant and Whitmore,
03:03attracts attention.
03:07The regulations, by the way, demand a minimum turning circle.
03:11Abarth are well-represented and, of course, the entry list is rich in assorted Alphids.
03:19Peter Harper has trouble finding the Tiger's splinter-proof label for the scrutineers,
03:24but, on the whole, the proceedings are conducted with a charming informality.
03:28Paul Hawkins, Markkinen's co-driver, is in prayerful mood.
03:40But, for Timo, the prospect of his first Tiger seems to please.
03:45Kampucci, winner in 1964 with Huska von Hennstein,
03:48and from Britain, well, the face is familiar.
03:51Mike Parks, a Ferrari, checks sprite development with Jeff Healey,
03:56and Joe Bonia hopes for his third win.
04:01That's it, all done?
04:03All done.
04:03Nobody is allowed to spoil the finish of the Ford with common paint,
04:07and, while the scrutineering goes on,
04:09Tommy Wisdom, himself a Tiger veteran,
04:12has a word or two in Finglish with Timo Markkinen.
04:14Now, Timo, you've come to the Targa Florio,
04:18your first Targa Florio.
04:20Why have you come?
04:21Oh, it's lovely weather.
04:22Well, that's a jolly good answer.
04:24Now, what do you think of the course?
04:26Oh, it's a very nice course, but very difficult to learn.
04:30Yes, and you're pleased with the car?
04:32Oh, not really.
04:33Very bumpy, sir.
04:33It's very hard.
04:35Yes, what about tires?
04:36Oh, you're using a lot of tires.
04:38After every two laps, I think we must change.
04:41I say, that's going to be hard work.
04:43It means you've got to go pretty quickly.
04:44Well, jolly good luck anyhow.
04:46Thank you.
04:47It's Timo who drives our camera around the 45-mile circuit.
04:51From the start, an easy climb to the village of Czerda.
05:07BMC put their trust for the Targa in rally drivers' hands,
05:11so Timo is an obvious choice.
05:13He takes Czerda with discretion.
05:15The roads are open.
05:23Now he's climbed to the heights above the village
05:26and the downhill stretch to the valley of the river Salito begins.
05:30But what do other drivers think about this circuit with its 295 corners every lap?
05:48Of course, it's important to just know what goes on around the next corner,
05:54and you get all sorts of people going very quickly here.
06:05It's a very deflating circuit.
06:07I think it's good to come here once a year and get your balance, sense of proportion correct.
06:12Otherwise, you might think you're a lot better than you are.
06:18Graham Hill is to drive a prototype Porsche with Joe Bonnier.
06:22Team manager Von Henstein talks about it.
06:24Yes, and unfortunately, it's a little bit too new, but it seems to be the fate of all manufacturers.
06:31They only get their new cars ready at the very last minute,
06:35and so it happened with this car, which has only been completed the night before we left,
06:40so we don't know much about it.
06:43We had some similar cars test-driven, but of course not on a circuit like this and not in conditions like here.
06:50I always liked the pure road races. I used to love the millimilia, but of course that doesn't exist anymore.
07:12How many times have you driven in the Targa?
07:14Six times. This is my seventh time.
07:17I see. How many times have you won?
07:20I won it twice.
07:21And placings?
07:23Well, let's see now. I've finished...
07:26Actually, out of the six times I've driven here, I've finished four times,
07:30and I've won it twice. I've finished second ones, and I've finished third ones.
07:34How do you rate your chances this time?
07:36Well, I hope we win.
07:39Next, Tommy Wisdom speaks to Ludovico Scafiotti, Italian Victor of Le Mans, 1963.
07:46How do you compare with those other races which you've engaged in?
07:51It's very interesting, like races.
07:55You remain only this after the millimilia.
07:58It's, I would say, a race in the street.
08:02Like millimilia, little millimilia. I like very much.
08:05Which is very, very, very hard because it's very stankante, fatigous, I don't know what I say.
08:12Yes, fatiguing indeed. That's the Targa Florio.
08:16By now, Timo is driving up to the heights by Cultivatura, the highest part of the course and about 28 kilometers out.
08:27Here, he sweeps left down the road built specially by Mussolini for the Targa.
08:32Then, it's down the side of the mountains to the Imara Valley.
08:36The Targa Florio.
08:43The Targa Florio.
08:53Il nostro corso gratuito è molto stato uguale, come una serie di sali speciali in Alps.
09:20È fabuloso.
09:21I'll enjoy it, whether we finish high up or not, it's good fun.
09:36Timo's hammering hard, and it's as well to remember that the roads aren't closed,
09:41even when under pressure from a works Ferrari.
09:51It's, I reckon, it's the toughest race in existence in the world for a motor car and for the driver,
10:11because the concentration which you require for driving around this circuit is incredible.
10:19There's no relax, no moment of relaxation whatsoever.
10:23You've got to be absolutely 100% on the ball all the time.
10:28I like the challenge. The more difficult it is, the more I enjoy it.
10:32We have a special set of gearbox ratios for the cars,
10:35where first, second, third, and fourth are all very close together for rushing around the mountains.
10:41And then on the one six-kilometer straight, we have a, what's the equivalent of an overdrive top,
10:47and then you pop the thing in the top gear to rush down there at something like a hundred and thirty-five miles.
10:53You're doing a hundred and seventy-five, are you, on that one straight on the course?
10:58Yes, it's six kilometers of dead straight, and we go out to that, that's good.
11:04And so to official practice.
11:07Tommy Wisdom is in the pits finding out what's what
11:09and telling the boys, no doubt, of his Jaguar experiences here in 1953.
11:20Lorenzo Bandini, winner of Le Mans in 1963,
11:23talks with his co-driver of that occasion, Ludovico Scafiotti.
11:27This time, Bandini is to share with Nino Baccarella,
11:31Scafiotti with Mike Parks.
11:33And so, practice begins.
11:42Timo demonstrates his particular recipe for saving the tires.
11:46Keep them airborne.
12:03Practice times in the Targa have no effect on starting positions,
12:11but most people try like mad.
12:15The Pucci Porsche is the only practice casualty,
12:18crashed by Viannini without personal injury,
12:21but it isn't the end of Pucci's race,
12:23for he is to move in with class on another of the works cars,
12:26number 94.
12:27The new Porsche is causing bother.
12:39Neither Graham Hill nor Joe Bonnier like its handling,
12:42and opt to drive an eight-cylinder,
12:45leaving number 182 to Colin Davis and Gerhard Mitter.
12:48Paul Hawkins puts up a good practice time in the big Healy,
12:55but there's nobody to touch Sicilian-born Nino Baccarella
12:59in the 275 P2 Ferrari.
13:02He's a schoolmaster in Palermo, the popular hero.
13:09Local knowledge is a tremendous advantage on a circuit as long as this.
13:14Listen to his teammate, Ludovico Scafiotti.
13:17You know Baccarella, you know,
13:19every day when you come here to do a bath in the sea,
13:23he goes to do a lap in the targa flora.
13:25It's very, very quick, very, very.
13:28It's not easy to do the same time.
13:32Yes, not very easy to beat,
13:34for Baccarella has just become the first man ever
13:36to better 40 minutes for the 45-mile Piccolo-Madoni circuit,
13:41and very hot work it seems to have been.
13:43As race morning approaches,
13:46the road men complete their token gestures,
13:49the enthusiasts have decorated the circuit,
13:51and the drivers have added some road signs of their own,
13:54which can't be found in any highway code.
14:01Posters urge the populace to good race behavior,
14:04to keep dogs indoors,
14:05to sit inside the bends.
14:07And here's one which could well be translated as
14:11lock up your daughters.
14:13So, to the dawn of race day,
14:15and all around the circuit,
14:17people are early awake.
14:21At the grandstand, the turnstiles click,
14:25although most sensible Sicilians see the show for nothing.
14:28The pre-start atmosphere comes up with the sun.
14:31It's Targa Florio Day.
14:33The 59 cars line up in order of departure.
14:56Smallest first, 30 seconds between each.
14:59Before them, 10 laps, 450 miles,
15:02of one of the toughest racing circuits in the world.
15:06There's Peter Harper in Tigrish mood,
15:08and Joe Bonnier in the souvenir business.
15:10The Marshall's late return
15:12delays the start due at 8 a.m. by 12 minutes.
15:18Jeff Healy, suitably dressed for the occasion,
15:21gets the Sprite ready for Altonen.
15:24And there's Bandini,
15:26debonair as ever, as the tension mounts.
15:28Now, the first car of the 1300cc GT cars is on the line.
15:39There's just 30 seconds to go.
15:41It's the Giodar Alpine.
15:43The Petruzzi Porro, Alfa T-Z.
15:56Vigilio in a works Abarth.
16:01Paddy Hopkirk in the M.G. Midget.
16:03Dennett's due to lead the 1300 GT class on lap one
16:13and to crash on lap two.
16:15The Buccinella Todara Alfa.
16:19Another TZ, Bianchi Roland.
16:23Class and the Porsche 904.
16:27Timo Makkinen.
16:28Ferrari GTO, Pugaccio.
16:38Before the prototypes are away,
16:40the early numbers are storming through Cerda,
16:43awakening the early morning village echoes.
16:46The Kalascibeto Vigilio Ebat is going great guns.
16:50It passes 11 cars on the first lap.
16:52Back at the pits, the prototypes are on the line.
17:13Algernon in the Sprite.
17:19Jobonia.
17:22Conant Davis.
17:26The Ford, Bondurian piloting.
17:33Maccarella.
17:41Partito Scarpioti.
17:43Now, the big bangers are chasing the small cars hard
17:51and the race is really on.
17:56The Alpine of Boru-Ché Nice.
18:05Paddy's going well and really trying.
18:0920 kilometres out now,
18:23down into the river valley and up the other side.
18:25That's the Hermancella Ebat.
18:29Maglioli is in Porsche number 176.
18:32On 96 is the works Ferrari of Piscaldi.
18:40Up on the Cultivatura Heights now,
18:42and the multiple echoes from the mountains add to the din.
18:45You can hear a car 10 kilometres up the road.
18:48Now, trouble begins.
19:01The Torpetti Grana 275 LM buckles a wheel.
19:05The car, incidentally, was homologated only in Italy.
19:08This incident takes 15 minutes to sort out,
19:11but it gets going again.
19:13Gennice isn't so lucky in his work's alpine.
19:16For him, the race is over.
19:19And coming up,
19:20the only time you'll see number 112,
19:22the Ulysses Marchese GTO,
19:24in mint condition.
19:2694 is the Pucci-class Porsche 904 again.
19:41Here's Paddy Hopkirk on his way up to Vivio Polizzi,
19:4438 kilometres out,
19:46and here's Timo.
19:49Guichet in the third P2.
19:51Colisano,
19:57a typical sleepy Sicilian village a week ago,
20:01now just a part of a racing circuit.
20:08In the Targa,
20:09many drivers cloak themselves in anonymity.
20:12Believe it or not,
20:13that Alfa is driven by Ben-Hur and the Tortoise.
20:19No!
20:21On to the straight,
20:27and it's almost the end of lap one.
20:30A maroon is fired
20:31as each car nears the pit area.
20:35It signs for the Vigilio Abart,
20:38first on the road.
20:39Malioli,
20:57sixth overall.
20:58Vaccarella in the lead
21:03Colin Davis tenth
21:07Scaffiotti second
21:11The Ford third
21:15Vaccarella's time
21:1740 minutes 5 seconds
21:19from a standing start
21:20only 4.7 seconds
21:23outside Villi Maressi's existing record
21:28The Sicilians treat their motor racing in gala fashion
21:42but they take it no less seriously for all that
21:44It's the big day out in the year
21:46and not even an angry Ferrari can cut the supply lines
21:50The circuit itself is a place
21:58for pedestrians as well as for cars
22:00and sitting on the outside of the bend
22:02legs dangling
22:03means nothing to Luigi
22:05It's a picnic fiesta
22:07and a roaring racing car
22:09doesn't stop you trumping your partner's ace
22:11Even the Sicilian dogs
22:18refuse to recognize
22:20that motor racing is dangerous
22:22De Bourbon's GTO has been shunted already
22:40Later he is to crash more seriously
22:42After a bad first lap
22:54Colin Davis is pushing hard
22:56and so is the Ford GT
22:58Vaccarella's going even faster
23:13Lap 2 takes him less than the Magic 40
23:1639.21 to be exact
23:1839.3 seconds
23:20inside the previous record
23:22There's that GTO again
23:34after modifications
23:35Vaccarella in action
23:49Maglioli
23:51As expected
24:01the big Healy is in the pits early
24:03The Scandinavian style
24:05gives the tyre people grey hair
24:07we're told
24:07Leave the front
24:17The Ferrari GTO is also in for a quick check
24:32on its four and after rebuilding
24:34Scafiot is still in second place
24:36but soon there's drama in the Ferrari pit
24:39when team manager Dragone
24:40learns that the car's steering has gone
24:43and it's a bit bent in consequence
24:45But the other three works Ferraris are still going
24:55and Bandini has time to get his shoes right
24:58before Vaccarella comes in
25:00at the end of the third lap
25:01Nina Vaccarella has won his co-driver
25:14a lead of nearly five minutes
25:15and the prancing horse and the prancing horse of Modena
25:17has his hopes well on
25:19However, here's the tiger in a four-paw drift
25:23However, here's the tiger in a four-paw drift
25:45Rano Altonen's rally technique has got him to third place in class
26:06A secondary pit area has been established on the high ground
26:17up by Bibbio Polizzi
26:19and a good thing too for some of the competitors
26:21among them the Topetti Grana Ferrari
26:24There are a few further modifications necessary
26:31for the Ulysses Marchesi Ferrari
26:33but they don't take long
26:35and it's soon on its way again
26:36The rubber hammers are much in demand at the Polizzi pits
26:46That's the Bluensauer Ferrari GTO
26:49for receiving a spot of body bashing
26:51The Sicilian dust is being raised with a vengeance now
26:58as the roads take their ferocious annual pound
27:01Bandini's holding on to the lead
27:12Bandini's holding on to the lead
27:12Bandini's holding on to the lead
27:16Bandini's holding on to the lead
27:17Maglioli is running fifth overall
27:19and as the cars become more and more mixed up
27:21lap charts are a problem for the enthusiasts
27:24The Maglioli Porsche comes in at the end of the fourth lap
27:29As the cacti drows in the midday sun
27:52the original entry of 59 becomes more and more depleted
27:57For many of the drivers the long walk back has already begun
28:05The Chalas-Gibeta Virgilio Eibart is solidly in the lead in the smallest GT class
28:14and Bandini leads the race overall
28:17And in the Targa it isn't only the drivers who dice with death
28:27At times the circuit looks like bank holiday on the Brighton Road
28:36But the crowds, there are over a quarter of a million around the circuit
28:40enjoy every second
28:42Sir John Whitmore third overall
28:54And the Sprite is still third in its class
29:01The Chalas-Gibeta Virgilio Eibart
29:06The Chalas-Gibeta Virgilio Eibart
29:08The Chalas-Gibeta Virgilio Eibart
29:10The Chalas-Gibeta Virgilio Eibart
29:11The Chalas-Gibeta Virgilio Eibart
29:12The Chalas-Gibeta Virgilio Eibart
29:13The Chalas-Gibeta Virgilio Eibart
29:14The Chalas-Gibeta Virgilio Eibart
29:15La fine fin-tailed Alpine di Gransia è riuscita seconda in la 1600
29:41prototipi class, but it is soon to crash and catch fire.
29:48196, the Viscaldi Deserti GTB is fourth in class,
29:52so in the big prototypes, it's Ferrari, Ferrari, Ford, Ferrari.
30:02Now the Sprite is having its own private war
30:05with the bent and battered Ferrari GTO.
30:11There's some hairy driving among the small GTs.
30:38The Abarth No. 26 still has it.
30:41But the Gilberti Nord car, No. 28, is trying hard.
30:45And so is Hopkirk in third place.
30:57There can be no doubt about it.
30:59Paddy is really enjoying his special stages in the Sicilian Alps.
31:03Half distance now.
31:25John Whitmore, holding the Ford GT in third place overall,
31:29comes near to disaster when his wheel comes off on the straight
31:33and the hub nut can't be found.
31:35Eventually, a spectator returns it.
31:44And still, Bandini's Ferrari continues to set the pace.
32:02With the Ford in trouble, the Maglioli Porsche is up to third place overall.
32:08Having limped back to the pits, the Ford gets rapid attention.
32:11Whitmore had found time to ring up the press box for the warning message.
32:16It could only happen in the target.
32:18The car is passed as okay,
32:19but the incident puts it right out of the running for a major award.
32:23If that helmet transfer is worn backwards for luck,
32:49it just isn't working.
32:50But Bob Bondurin sets off, determined as ever.
33:02Now, Paddy's drive ends
33:04as he hands the valiant midget over to Andrew Hodges.
33:07His has been a considerable achievement,
33:09for the almost standard midget
33:11is only eight minutes behind the class leaders,
33:14the very hot Abarths,
33:15a position not acquired without a certain expenditure
33:18of the hot Coke sweat.
33:20I might have to slow up a little bit.
33:22And then after two anyway.
33:24And then after two anyway.
33:25No!
33:26No, no, no, no, no!
33:27No!
33:28I'll be still receiving.
33:29I'll be still receiving.
33:30We'll be talking.
33:31We'll be talking.
33:31We'll be talking.
33:32Keep going.
33:33Keep going.
33:34Oh, change it, quick!
33:35Hey, change it!
33:37Soon, news comes that the Abarth lying second
33:52in the 1300 GT category has crashed
33:54and that the midget is now in second place.
33:59But further drama hears the class leader
34:02with a broken throttle linkage
34:03at a time when every second cuts.
34:17Vigilio displays understandable impatience
34:20as he sees his class lead disappearing second by second.
34:23No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
34:33But the delay is not quite long enough for hedges in the midget
35:03and the status quo is soon restored.
35:05And the status quo is soon restored.
35:33The Hermancella Abarth, fourth overall, spins, but stays well ahead in the 1600 prototype class.
35:40Now the Ford is going great guns in the January 15th
36:05Now the Ford is going great guns in a desperate effort to regain lost time
36:12and the 49th Targa Florio is still full of excitement and incident.
36:21The chart experts are nightmare with cars all round the course
36:25and many of them on different laps.
36:29Oh the noise, it's all much too complicated for mama.
36:35More bad news for Ferrari.
36:41The Baguetti Gishe car is out on the course with ignition trouble
36:45and Baguetti has had a long walk back to Cerda.
36:50But there's nothing the matter with Bandini as he roars in to redeliver Nino's original lead
36:56with its pristine timing.
36:58Five minutes ahead of the rest of the field,
37:00now led by the new Porsche driven by Davis and Mitter.
37:03Bonnier and Hill must be kicking themselves.
37:33So now it's Nino's turn again and, barring accidents, he must win.
37:44Now the Hill Bonnier Porsche comes in five minutes late.
37:48Graham had lost time earlier when a throttle linkage broke up by the Polizzi pits.
37:55Bonnier takes over and Graham looks far from happy.
37:59But the Porsche grip has tightened on the Ferraris
38:01and von Hanstein's cars now run second, third and fifth overall.
38:06The Ford GT efforts are finally brought to nothing
38:35when Bondurant, trying perhaps a fraction too hard,
38:39ends up against a concrete road post.
38:44But his is not the only disappointment.
38:47The Biscaldi Deserti Ferrari, second in the three-litre prototype class,
38:51is as good as out with transmission trouble.
38:54And the Porsche hold on the Targa Florio of 1965 strengthens still firm.
38:59On the ninth lap, they are second, third, fourth and fifth.
39:04The big Healey was running first in class,
39:06but ignition trouble lost its time and now it's second.
39:10The Sprite is being driven with typical determination.
39:13And now the leader starts his tenth and final lap.
39:19The Davis Mitter Porsche is second.
39:20And it becomes a matter of Sicilian honor.
39:31Bonnier is fourth.
39:33Behind the leaders scurry the class winners.
39:59Of the small GTs, the Eibart is still first with the Midget second.
40:07The Rovetta Staraba GTO leads the three-litre GT class
40:11with the Healey still second.
40:14And third in this class, the Ulysses Marchese GTO.
40:18The Hermancella Eibart leads the Sprite in the 1600 prototype class
40:26and runs sixth overall.
40:29But all the Sicilian interest is centered on Baccarella
40:32and the big red Ferrari as it rushes towards the finish.
40:37Cultivatura for the last time.
40:39Colisano for the last time.
41:03And on to the Coast Road.
41:05Ten kilometers to go and six of them straight.
41:09So Baccarella and Bandini win for Ferrari
41:16with Porsche second, third, fourth, and fifth.
41:20What a triumph for the Sicilian-born driver.
41:37The headmaster from Palermo who now joins the great names of the Targa winners.
41:41The Sicilians are so excited that they nearly forget that Bandini also did something towards it.
41:49But for Baccarella, winning his own race in his own country, this is a day to remember.
41:55For the winners, the laurels are perhaps the only Rio road race left in the world today.
42:12And the 49th Targa Florio ends in the way that every Sicilian dream.
42:17But to the victors themselves, the final word.
42:26Yes, I love Targa Florio because it's the competition of my house.
42:34And Lorenzo, I like it too much Targa Florio.
42:38I much bend.
42:39So the Charing and the Tumult die and the Piccolo-Madoni circuit is just an ordinary road again.
