FRENCH : Le groupe Maarten est né à Rouen à la fin des années 90, issu d’une école pop/rock largement influencée par ses voisins anglo-saxons. Il privilégie une instrumentation riche (cordes, cuivres, … arrangements sans prétention mais habilement dessinés) qui apporte à la classique formule du quartet pop guitare/basse/batterie/chant un supplément d’élégance. Le premier E.P. « Our most beautiful days » sort en 1999 et reçoit un accueil très positif (Inrockuptibles, Magic...). En 2005, sort le premier album du groupe, Pictures of a Danish Girl, dont certains extraits sont parus dans diverses compilations (CQFD, Popnews popvolume4 et Porc Epic La puissance du port du Havre). Ce splendide recueil de chanson pop mélancolique et raffinnée regorge de belles lignes mélodiques brillamment chantées et d’arrangements ciselés. Après avoir multiplié les concerts (Rock dans tous ses Etats, Festival des Inaperçus…), Maarten envisage d’enregistrer son second album. En accord avec leur label Boxson, le groupe décide de travailler avec un producteur pour que cet album bénéficie de moyens plus conséquents. Jason Lytle, leader de la formation californienne Grandaddy, charmé par les démos du groupe, accepte de prendre les commandes de ce projet. Fin octobre 2006, débute une première session de deux semaines au Havre. Puis, un mois plus tard, les membres de Maarten s’envolent retrouver Jason Lytle dans son home-studio à Bozeman, Montana, pour finir les enregistrements. Très impliqué dans le projet, Jason prend alors en main le mixage en compagnie de Thom Monahan (producteur de Devendra Banhart, Pop Levi, Pernice Brothers…). Dans ce nouvel album, Maarten a su combiner la qualité mélodique pour laquelle il est reconnu avec des influences plus rock inspirées par des groupes américains tels que Grandaddy, Sparklehorse ou Blonde Redhead. Avec « My Favourite Sheriff », Maarten s’impose comme l’un des tous meilleurs groupes français anglophone au rayonnement international. On pourra, prochainement, retrouver le groupe sur scène pour défendre cet excellent nouvel album. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ENGLISH : When Maarten was born in Rouen at the end of the 1990's influenced by English and American music, the band decided to play a different kind of pop combining classical rock elements and brass instruments as well as strings. The band released its first ep "our most beautiful days" in 1999 and the feedback from the french musical press was very good (les Inrockuptibles, Magic,...). In 2005 Maarten released its first lp "Pictures of a Danish girl" and featured on the several compilations (les Inrockuptibles, Popnews,...). "Pictures of a Danish girl" is a collection of delicate, melancholy pop songs with subtle arrangements. After a good deal of concerts, Maarten decided to record a second lp. Backed by their label Boxson, the band wanted to work with a producer and contacted Jason Lytle who accepted after hearing the band's promising demos. The first recording session took place in Le Havre with Jason Lytle at the end of october 2006. A month later the band flew to America to finish the recording in Jason's homestudio in Montana. Jason Lytle mixed the lp with the help of Thom Monahan (producer of Devendra Banhart, Pop Levi, Pernice Brothers,...) In the new lp Maarten combines their trademark pop songs with American rock elements influenced by Grandaddy, Sparklehorse, or Blonde Redhead. With « My Favourite Sheriff » Maarten proves to be one of the top French bands singing in English.
