I haven't bought new running shoes in eight years, and getting back into running on dead, flat foam was destroying my feet. So I went out and spent $671 building a complete testing matrix across four price tiers — from a $30 budget shoe all the way up to a $280-level performance runner — plus three different aftermarket insoles to see if you can actually cheat the system.

This breaks down every shoe in the lineup: the $30 Temu budget shoe as the baseline control, the Hoka Mach 7 as a speed and gym hybrid, the Hoka Clifton 11 as a max-cushion daily cruiser, and the Asics Superblast 3 as the high-end crown jewel. I also dig into the insole science — Dr. Scholl's budget inserts versus premium Currex RunPro insoles — to find out if a cheap shoe with the right insole can actually compete with a $200+ setup. Starting the real 4-week mileage test soon, with honest, raw performance reviews as the miles add up.

If the $45 upgraded budget combo holds up anywhere close to the $200 setup, that changes the entire value equation for anyone getting into running. Do you think a $15 insole can save a $30 shoe, or is that a recipe for shin splints by day three?
