This octopus carries a coconut shell across the ocean floor—and scientists have described the behavior as a form of tool use.

Meet the coconut octopus, also known as the veined octopus (Amphioctopus marginatus), one of the most fascinating animals in the ocean. Unlike most animals that simply find shelter, this remarkable octopus has been observed collecting and carrying discarded coconut shells and using them as portable protection.

In this episode of Animalia Chronicles, we explore the strange behavior and intelligence of the coconut octopus. Discover why this soft-bodied animal carries shells, how it uses objects for protection, and why scientists became fascinated by its ability to transport something it could potentially use later.

🐙 In this video, you'll discover:
• Why the coconut octopus carries coconut shells
• How octopuses use objects as protection
• Why scientists consider this a form of tool use
• How the octopus moves while carrying a shell
• Why being soft-bodied makes protection important
• How octopuses use camouflage to escape predators
• Why octopuses are considered highly intelligent invertebrates
• What this strange behavior reveals about animal intelligence

The coconut octopus doesn't have bones, armor, or a permanent shell of its own. Instead, it finds protection in the environment around it—and sometimes carries that protection with it.

To us, an empty coconut shell may look like debris on the ocean floor.

To this octopus, it can be survival equipment.
