👞🔥 MEET JAN ERNST MATZELIGER—an extraordinary Black inventor whose innovation transformed the shoe-manufacturing industry!

Born in 1852 in Paramaribo, Suriname, Jan Ernst Matzeliger eventually moved to the United States and settled in Lynn, Massachusetts, which was a major center of American shoe manufacturing.

One of the most difficult and important steps in making shoes was called lasting—shaping and attaching the upper portion of a shoe around a foot-shaped form called a last.

Skilled workers performed this demanding process by hand, limiting how quickly shoes could be produced.

💡 MATZELIGER HAD AN IDEA.

He worked to develop a machine capable of performing the lasting process mechanically.

In 1883, Matzeliger received a U.S. patent for his lasting machine. His innovations helped make mechanized shoe production faster and contributed to reducing manufacturing costs.

His achievement was especially remarkable because Matzeliger faced racial discrimination and limited resources while pursuing his invention.

Yet his determination and mechanical ability helped him accomplish something that many believed couldn't be done.

Sadly, Jan Ernst Matzeliger died from tuberculosis in 1889, when he was only 37 years old.

His life was short—but his impact was enormous. 👞✨

Today, Jan Ernst Matzeliger deserves to be remembered as an important figure in Black history, American industrial history, and the history of invention.
