Deep beneath the hills of Central Texas lies a network of reinforced concrete tunnels built during the Cold War to store and maintain America’s nuclear weapons. Known as Killeen Base and later incorporated into West Fort Hood, this heavily guarded facility featured blast doors, underground storage rooms, and a structure designed to absorb the shock of a nuclear attack.
Discover how 25 rural communities disappeared to make way for a military installation, why German prisoners of war worked on nearby Texas farms, and how Elvis Presley spent six months training at Fort Hood. We also explore the underground complex’s unusual engineering, its Cold War nuclear mission, and its modern use for military training.
