"Blade Runner" Oscar Pistorius, the South African double amputee who became one of the biggest names in world athletics, arrived in court on Tuesday (February 19) to apply for bail after being charged with murdering his girlfriend.

The police vehicle carrying the 26-year-old Olympic and Paralympic sprinter could be seen arriving at court early in the day.

News of Pistorius' arrest for the murder of model Reeva Steenkamp has stunned millions across the world who hold him as a hero for triumphing over adversity to compete with able-bodied athletes at the highest level of sport.

Steenkamp was found shot dead in Pistorius' Pretoria home in the early hours of Thursday (February 14), with initial reports suggesting Pistorius may have mistaken her for an intruder.

Police say Steenkamp, who will be buried on Tuesday, was killed by more than one gunshot. They said a 9mm pistol was recovered at the house, where there was no sign of a break in.

Pistorius' agent says his client disputes the murder charge "in the strongest possible terms".
