Sports star Oscar Pistorius returned to the Pretoria court for the second day in a police car with a blanket covering his head.

The South African is accused of the premeditated murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

His lawyers are fighting to have him released on bail. A full trial is not expected for months.

On Tuesday Pistorius told the court he shot his girlfriend through a bathroom door after mistaking her for an intruder.

He said he loved her and had never intended to kill her.

But his account was disputed by the prosecution, who said the couple may have argued before the shooting.

The case has aroused huge interest in South Africa, where Oscar Pistorius is regarded as a national hero.

SOUNDBITE: Resident Jason Rush, saying:

"The first thing I would do would be look to see whether if my partner is in bed. If I hear a strange noise I would say to my partner you stay here, I'll go and check."

SOUNDBITE: Resident Mercy Dube, saying:

"There are obviously questions to be asked why he didn't check to see if Reeva was there, to see if she hadn't been harmed, you know, then go check on the intruder."

Pistorius is a multiple Paralympic champion, winning several gold medals.

In London he made history by becoming the first double amputee to run in the Olympics as an able-bodied athlete.
