NASA captures images of the 'Comet of the Century'.
2013 promises to be an exciting one for those interested in cosmic events.
'Comet of the Century' will certainly add to that excitement. Recently, NASA’s Deep Impact spacecraft captured the very first images of that comet.
Dubbed ISON, it is expected to pass through the inner solar system at a later date this year. Scientists expect that the new comet will have the potential to put on an amazing display in November during its closest journey to the sun.
Several forecasts have predicted that the comet will shine brighter than a full moon. This winter, the tail measured 40,000 miles.
The photos which were taken on January 17th and 18th depict a bright ball passing along a dark star-studded sky. The project manager for the Deep Impact spacecraft at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Tim Larson states “This is the fourth comet on which we have performed science observations and the farthest point from Earth from which we've tried to transmit data on a comet”.
The comet is not a threat in any way as it will remain at least 40 million miles away from Earth .
